About & methodology

Draft — the owner will review this page before launch.

Convert & See is a small collection of measurement converters built around one idea: a simple calculation deserves a clear, honest presentation.

How conversions are calculated

Every unit is stored with its exact definition in terms of an SI base unit, following NIST Special Publication 811. For example, 1 inch = 0.0254 meter and 1 pound = 0.45359237 kilogram. Factors are kept as exact fractions, so 1 foot converts to exactly 12 inches rather than 12.000000000000002.

Temperature uses its own formulas with offsets (°F = °C × 9/5 + 32) instead of a single multiplication, and anything below absolute zero is rejected.

How results are rounded

Numbers are calculated at full precision and rounded only for display. Each result is labeled Exact or Rounded so you know whether more digits exist.

How the drawings work

The rulers, height scale and thermometer are drawn from the same numbers as the result, at true scale. When a value is too small or too large to draw meaningfully, the drawing says so instead of inventing a proportion.

Testing

Automated tests cover the conversion engine, including the exact NIST definitions, round trips, extreme values and invalid input. They also recompute every worked example published on these pages.
