How to use it
- Type an area. Commas, decimals and scientific notation all work.
- Pick the unit you have and the unit you want; swap reverses them and keeps the area.
- Check the floor plan: count the squares, or compare with the outlined court, field or bed.
How the conversion works
An area unit is a length unit squared, so its factor is the length factor squared. Because the foot is exactly 0.3048 m, every factor below is exact:
1 ft² = 0.3048² m² = 0.09290304 m² (exact)
1 yd² = 9 ft² = 0.83612736 m² (exact)
1 acre = 43,560 ft² = 4,046.8564224 m² (exact)
1 hectare = 10,000 m² ≈ 2.4711 acres
1 mi² = 640 acres = 2.589988110336 km² (exact)
A common mistake is to use the length factor: 1 m is about 3.28 ft, but 1 m² is about 10.76 ft² (3.28 × 3.28). The drawing makes this visible: one square meter holds almost eleven square feet.
Worked examples
1 acre in square feet
1 × 43,560
43,560 ft²
20 m² in square feet
20 ÷ 0.09290304
215.28 ft²
1,000 ft² in square meters
1,000 × 0.09290304
92.90304 m²
1 hectare in acres
10,000 ÷ 4,046.8564224
2.4711 ac
1 square mile in acres
5,280² ÷ 43,560
640 ac
Where this comes up
- Homes and rentals: US listings in square feet, European listings in square meters.
- Flooring and paint: buying materials by the square foot or square yard.
- Land: acres in the US, hectares almost everywhere else.
- Maps and geography: square miles versus square kilometers.
Accuracy and rounding
Factors are exact and results are rounded only for display. This converter uses the international foot; the retired US survey foot would change the acre by about 4 parts per million. Sizes of the comparison spaces come from published rules (tennis, basketball, football, ISO card sizes) or are labeled as typical.
Questions
How many square feet are in a square meter?
About 10.7639. Exactly, 1 m² = 1 ÷ 0.09290304 ft².
How big is an acre?
43,560 square feet, or about 4,047 m² — roughly three quarters of an American football field including the end zones.
What is the difference between an acre and a hectare?
A hectare is 10,000 m², about 2.47 acres. An acre is about 0.405 hectares.
Why is my area drawn as a square?
Any shape can have the same area; a square is the easiest to compare. Its side is the square root of the area, shown in both metric and US units.
